PREVIEW: Division 1 Looks To Keep Win Streak Going Against Aquinas/Davenport

EAST LANSING, MI – The Division I Michigan State University women’s hockey team takes on two single games this weekend, their opponents Aquinas College and Davenport University. Friday night’s game versus Aquinas has puck drop at 9pm in Grand Rapids. Sunday’s game features Davenport starting at 1:50 pm at Munn Ice Arena. 



SAINTS SECRETS


Aquinas College is currently 2-6 this season with 13 goals for and 39 against. Natalie Vaitas has the team high points with five goals. Alyssa Buzar has put up four assists while Gabrielle Fournier has registered three points (1g, 2a). Ally Kennedy has been between the pipes to earn a 2-6 record while picking up a single shutout thus far. Kennedy also has made 280 saves in just eight games. 


Their last time on the ice the Saints faced off with CCWHA member Miami University, taking a 12-0 loss. Kennedy made 47 saves on 59 shots on goal in their away loss. 


PANTHERS PRESS


Davenport has a 3-3 record for the 19-20 season with seven goals in their favor and 21 against them. Victoria Dubuc leads in points for the Panthers with three (2g, 1a). Morgan Pippin has put up three points as well (1g, 2a) and Courtney Mulligan has tallied two goals. In net Julia Gaynor (1-1) and Dayna Templeton (0-2) share the time. Gaynor has made 47 saves in two games while Templeton has stopped 80 shots in two games. 


The Panthers’ last series was against Division 2 CCWHA member Sault College, where they would split with the Canadian team. The second game of the series saw a win from Sault College, 3-2. Gaynor skated out and found both goals for the Panthers, while Pippin had both assists. 


SPARTAN SNAPSHOT


Michigan State enters the weekend at 5-1 with 30 goals for and just 13 against. Senior Julia Lutz is on top of the leaderboard with 15 points (10g, 5a), while senior Maddie Wolsmann has put up 14 points (6g, 8a). Lutz also has tallied two power play goals and a single game-winner, while Wolsmann has one power play and one game-winning-goal.

Sophomore Natalia Asimakis is also among the leaders in points with 11 (4g, 7a), and has one game-winning-goal. In net are two freshmen in Savina Osann and Hannah Bigelow. Osann is currently 3-0 while averaging 1.33 goals against per game and has stopped 53 total shots in three games. Bigelow is 2-1 after earning a 2.94 goals against average and picking up a shutout win 


In their last series, the Spartans took on Miami University on the road and came home with a sweep. Their last game was a 3-2 regulation win with goals from senior Kelsey Jaeckle (1g, 1a), junior Morgan Graham, and Lutz (1g, 1a). Wolsmann would tally two assists while Osann grabbed the win with 16 saves. 

ABOUT THE SERIES


Michigan State currently leads both series against Aquinas and Davenport. Since the 2017-18 season, the Spartans are 3-0 against Aquinas College. The green and white are 10-1 in games versus Davenport University since the 2014-15 season.
