EAST LANSING- The weekend of November 8 the Michigan State University Division I women’s hockey team gained two more victories in games against Aquinas College and Davenport University. The green and white face off with Aquinas again this upcoming weekend and hope for more wins.
Friday night’s victory against the Aquinas Bulldogs was a shutout with 73 shots on the opposing goal with a score of eight to zero. Sophmore Natalie Asimakis scored the first goal of the game, and grabbed a second goal in the second period, as well as an assist. Senior alternate captain Julia Lutz tallied two of the Spartan goals in the first period and snagged two assists through the rest of the game. Freshman Amber Danules earned her second goal in her first season as a Spartan and her 8th point of the season with an assist to help the Spartans yo a win. Senior captain Maddie Wolsmann tallied three goals in the bottom half of the game, earning a her a natural hat trick.
Freshman goalie Hannah Bigelow saved all 13 of the Aquinas shots on goal. Bigelow has been between the pipes for four out of the eight games this season, stopping 85 shots on goal, and has a save percentage of .904.
Sunday afternoon the Spartans rallied together for the second win of the weekend with an 11-1 victory against Davenport University. The women tallied 63 shots on the Davenport goal. Lutz started the game out with a natural hat trick to tally 3 more points to add to her 23-point season thus far in her eight games played. Wolsmann scored twice and pulled three assists to increase her record to 11 goals and 11 assists. Freshman Nadia Hoerman knocked two goals in and grabbed an assist for three goals and two assists for her first season. Senior alternate captain Alison Lariviere scored early in the second followed by a goal by Danules. In the second half of the second period junior Matti Savich scored her first goal of the season. Junior Morgan Graham tallied the last goal of the game to solidify the 11-1 victory against Davenport to snag her fourth goal of the season. Savina Osann spent the game between the posts, earning the win and saving 11 of 12 shots on goal by Davenport. Osann has a 4-0-0 record this season as she splits time in the net with Bigelow with a save percentage of .928. She has a season and career record of 64 saves.
In a post-game interview, Lutz shared her excitement for getting her first hat trick of the season and was grateful for her teammates that assisted her to achieve that accomplishment. “I think we put the pressure on Davenport and controled the game. It’s nice to see that we are working a lot of different plays in practice and to see it applied and succeed is really great,” said Lutz.
“It’s nice to get a big win to show the league who we are this season.” Osann shared, happy to help lead the team to victory. The ladies face off against Aquinas this Sunday November 17th at home and travel to Davenport on Sunday, November 23rd for a rematch. Follow along on social media for game updates and information.
