RECAP: Division 1 Spartans Take Down Michigan For Second Time

EAST LANSING, MI– The Division 1 Michigan State University women’s hockey team finished out the series with the University of Michigan this past Sunday, with the Spartans completing the sweep with a 7-2 win in game two.


The Wolverines found the first goal of the game, mid-way through the first period to take an unexpected early lead. Two minutes later Michigan State snapped that lead after senior Amelia Schroeder fired a shot on net from the point and junior Matti Savich tipped the puck in past the Michigan goaltender as it went by. Sophomore Kenzie D’Ascenzo with the secondary assist on the game-tying goal. Junior Morgan Graham gets her seventh goal of the season as linemates Maddie Wolsmann and D’Ascenzo grabbed assists on goal two. Wolsmann would start the second period with an amazing goal as Graham would send over the puck past two defenders for Wolsmann to finish in the back of the net. Michigan State’s third goal made it a 3-2 game with more than half of the game remaining. Sophomore Madison Baker with goal four at the ten minute mark as she storms the zone after keeping the puck onsides. Senior Allison Lariviere with the assist on Baker’s goal. Freshman Amber Danules would grab her fourth goal of the season, and Michigan State’s fifth goal of the day, unassisted after a slick shot from the slot. Graham tallied her second goal of the game mid-way through the final twenty minutes of play, also unassisted. While on the penalty kill, and with six minutes remaining in the game, senior Julia Lutz would get a break and snipe a short-handed goal past the Michigan netminder. The Spartans ended their only game of the weekend with 34 total shots on net, while freshman Hannah Bigelow stopped 28 of 30 shots on goal en route to picking up her sixth win of the season. 


Division 1 takes on the No. 3 team in the country, Lindenwood-Belleville University on Saturday, February 8 at 5:50pm at Munn Ice Arena. They then take on Penn State University on Sunday, February 9 with an 11:20am at Munn.
