EAST LANSING, MI– The Division 1 Michigan State University women’s hockey team took on a two game weekend, with games against No. 3 Lindenwood-Belleville University, and No. 14 Penn State University. The Lynx would grab a 4-1 win over the No. 5 Spartans, while the green and white snagged the 11-1 win over the Nittany Lions.
Saturday evening Lindenwood-Belleville came to East Lansing, and started off the game against Michigan State in a strong manner. Shots fired in a frenzy during the first minutes of the game saw freshman goaltender Hannah Bigelow getting a work out in. The scoreless game broke free at 9:15 into the first period when LUB would get their first goal that just went out of reach from the Spartan freshman netminder. The Lynx would strike again with two minutes remaining the third goal would not come until two minutes remaining in the second period, to put Lindenwood-Belleville up 3-0. With six minutes remaining in the game, the :ynx found their fourth and final goal while on the power play to make it 4-0 over Michigan State. A minute later, senior Maddie Wolsmann would carry the puck into the offensive zone and rip one towards the net
that found its way in for a 4-1 game. Sophomore Kenzie D’Ascenzo would grab the assist on the only Spartan goal of the game against Lindenwood. In net for the green and white, Bigelow made 34 saves on 38 shots on net, bringing her record to 6-1-1.
Sunday morning the Spartans began fresh with Penn State, hungry for a win. The Nittany Lions would score first, but Michigan State then struck back with eleven unanswered goals for the win. D’Ascenzo and freshman Amber Danules would each tally a hat trick, the second for D’Acenzo this season, and the first of her career for Danules. The other five green and white goals would come from juniors Katie Krumm (2), Blair Dzierwa and Matti Savich, and sophomore Natalia Asimakis. The assists on the eleven goals were tallied by Wolsmann (2), Savich, Asimakis (3), Danules, junior Morgan Graham (2), seniors Julia Lutz (4) and Amelia Schroeder, freshman Katie Novell and sophomore Madison Baker. Freshman Savina Osann was in net grabbing the win after making eight saves on nine shots faced.
The weekend’s third star goes to Lutz (4a), second star belongs to D’Ascenzo (3g, 1a), while first star is awarded to Danules (3g, 1a | 1 GWG).
