EAST LANSING, MI – The Division 1 Michigan State University women’s hockey team has grabbed wins eleven and twelve after a sweep of Robert Morris University – Illinois. In their fifth sweep of the season the Spartans had 9-0 and 7-2 wins over the Eagles.
In Saturday night’s game in East Lansing, the green and white had two consecutive two goal periods before a breakout third period to secure the 9-0 win. Senior Julia Lutz opened the scoring with her first of the night with three minutes remaining in the first period. Junior Morgan Graham and senior Maddie Wolsmann with the apples on the eventual game-winning-goal from Lutz. Familiar faces Graham and Lutz help junior Katie Krumm find the back of the net for goal number two just a minute later. The alternate captain Lutz finds her second of the game for the first goal of the second period 16 minutes into play, this time sophomore Natalia Asimakis gets the assist tally. Goal number four would come from freshman Amber Danules while on a Spartan power play. Assists on the Danules goal came from sophomore Madison Baker and freshman Katie Novell. The green and white would find goal five during the third period after Graham would send one home to open net from the slot after help from Askimakis and Lutz, multiple point night for all three players. Sophomore Lauren Kramer would find her first goal of the season with a power play goal for Michigan State. Graham and Lutz grabbed more assists in game one of the series with Robert Morris. Another Eagles’ penalty leads to another Spartan
goal, this time as Lutz gets her third goal for her third hat trick of the season. Captain Wolsmann and senior Kelsey Jaeckle appointed the assists on Michigan State’s seventh goal. A breakaway for Krumm was successful, which in turn put the Spartans up by eight. The final goal of the game was again to Lutz as she would finish her second game this season with four goals. Jaeckle and Wolsmann would grab assists on Lutz’s fourth goal and Michigan State’s ninth goal of the game. Freshman Hannah Bigelow was in net recording her third shutout of the season after stopping all 16 shots on goal.
Game two on Sunday morning had a similar start as Saturday’s matchup, as Michigan State shot out of the gate with two goals in the first period. Lutz would add a fifth goal for the weekend series, as she received a pass from Krumm on a two-on-one break and the senior forward would finish with a top shelf goal. Junior Matti Savich also grabbed an assist on the first Spartan goal. Goal number two started with a shot from the point as freshman Katie Novell would send a shot on net. Savich was waiting in the high slot and would tip the puck in for a two goal lead. Freshman Nadia Hoerman with secondary assist on the Savich tally. Robert Morris would answer back to begin the second period to make it a 2-1 game before the three minute mark into play. After a breakaway stop by freshman Savina Osann for Michigan State, senior Allison Lariviere would find the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season. Junior Blair Dzierwa and freshman Sydney Macpherson with the apples on the third Spartan goal. Sophomore Kenzie D’Ascenzo picked up her thirteenth point of her first Michigan State season as she would find the back of the net after a pass from Graham with three minutes remaining in period two, a 4-1 lead for the green and white. The Eagles started the third period with their second and final goal of the game. The
Spartans answered with another Lutz goal to make it a 5-2 game with nine minutes remaining in the game. Asimakis would send a snipe past the Eagles’ goaltender for goal six, before D’Ascenzo would finish out the scoring at the 16 minute mark after a sauce from Wolsmann and Graham. Osann was in net during game two completing the sweep for Michigan State after stopping 18 of 20 shots on goal from Robert Morris. Osann now moves to 7-0 in her first season wearing green and white.
The weekend’s third star belongs to Osann (18/20, win seven), second star goes to Bigelow (16/16, third shutout of season), and first star is awarded to Lutz (6g, 3a).
Division 1 takes the ice for their rescheduled game against Michigan this Sunday, February 2 at 2pm in East Lansing to finish the series between the cross-state rivals.
