RECAP: Division 2’s Taylor Snags Two Goals In Boston Losses

EAST LANSING, MI – The Division 2 Michigan State University women’s hockey team hosted Boston University for a two game non-league series this past weekend. Despite two losses, moving them to 7-9-1 this season, the Spartans played two hard fought games. 



In game one Michigan State would go up by one for an early lead after sophomore Sydney Taylor would find her fifth goal of the season. Junior Caelie Lane-Powers and freshman Sydney Crawford with the assists on goal number one. Boston would tie the game four minutes later. Freshman Katerina Poulos gave Michigan State the lead at the nine minute mark in the second period, after passes from Crawford and senior Erin Panter. However, the Terriers would even the score once more quickly after. Boston would find two more unanswered goals to begin the third period with a bang. With a 4-2 lead, the green and white put in two unanswered goals of their own. First, senior Allyson Conley would find open net at the 6:33 mark and a minute and a half later senior Lauren Larson would tie the game for the third time against Boston. Sophomore Gabriela Rowe, junior Gabriella Borbolla and Poulos with the assists on the two third period goals. The visiting team would find a final goal to grab the win in game one within the last five minutes of play. Katelyn Cygal was in net for Michigan State, the freshman goaltender is now 3-7-1. 


Sunday’s game saw two goals for Boston in the first period, one while on a powerplay. Halfway through the second period, Taylor put in her second goal of the weekend after passes from Lane-Powers and freshman Marnie Waggoner. The Terriers would go back up by two goals with thirty seconds left in the second period as they found their third goal of the

game.Sophomore Erin Bailey broke free and was all alone in the offensive zone, successfully scoring to bring the score to 3-2. Freshman Claire Bott and Crawford with assists on the Bailey goal. Two minutes to go and Boston would strike again on the power play, to make it a 4-2 final. Senior Danielle Williams was in net for Michigan State and is now 4-2 this season. 


Division 2 will welcome Sault College this weekend for senior weekend. Saturday’s puck drop on February 8 will be at 3:15pm, with senior festivities beginning at 2:50pm. Sunday’s game will begin at 8:45am, both games taking place at Munn Ice Arena.
