RECAP: Division 2 Spartans Pick Up First Sweep Of Season

EAST LANSING, MI – The Division II Michigan State Women’s hockey team took down Concordia University in a two game non-league series, for their first sweep of the season. 9-0 and 11-1 showed two dominant wins saw points from 18 different skaters in two games.



Saturday’s game saw a shutout for freshman Katelyn Cygal in the 9-0 win. Sophomore Gabriela Rowe started things off with the eventual game-winner just 1:30 into the first period, unassisted. Freshman Katerina Poulos would net two within the first period after Rowe’s opening goal to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead after twenty minutes. Sophomore captain Natalie Masopust, sophomore alternate captain Cara Hodgins, freshman Lindsay Reiss and senior Allyson Conley put up the assists on the first three goals. To begin the second period, sophomore Sydney Taylor grabbed her first goal of the season after passes from freshmen Christina Berels and Lily Kirkman. Conley would find a goal of her own to bring the total to 5-0 after two periods of play. Reiss and sophomore Lindsay Garrett with the assists on the Conley goal. The Spartans would tally four more goals in the third period for a 9-0 win. Those third period goals came from junior Caelie Lane-Powers, senior alternate Alex Paquette, Garrett and Kirkman. Six different Spartans grabbed third period assists including Berels (2), Rowe, Garrett, Taylor, sophomore Erin Bailey and senior Lauren Larson.

Game two, back at home. Concordia would grab the first goal in the first three minutes of play, but that would be their only goal of the game. Michigan State sprung back for 11 unanswered goals on home ice, with seven different skaters putting the puck in the net.

Freshman Sydney Taylor earned first star of the weekend with 2g, 4a.

Taylor (1g, 2a), Larson (4g), Paquette, Rowe (1g, 1a), Lane-Powers (1g, 1a), freshman Claire Bott and junior Gabrielle Borbolla (2g) would be credited with the goals. For the assists in game two, those came from freshman Marnie Waggoner, sophomore Hannah Miller (2a), senior Erin Panter (3a), Hodgins, Berels, Taylor (2a), and Kirkman. Junior goaltender Danielle Williams picked up the big win at Munn for her first of the season.

The third star of the weekend goes to Rowe (2g, 2a), second star belongs to Larson (4g, 1a), while the first star of the weekend is awarded to Taylor (2g, 4a).

The Spartans look towards the University of Michigan-Dearborn on November 8 and 9 for a home-and-away series.
